WM Housing Group
Michael Dyson Associates Ltd was appointed to develop proposals for the internal refurbishment and remodelling of two sheltered schemes on either side of the city of Coventry named Jack Ball House and George Rowley House. The sites have almost identical building layouts, comprising a 30 bedroom two-storey block and single-storey link to a specialist dementia care wing with individual bedrooms.
We developed a number of options for each site involving a combination of conversion and new build accommodation. Agreed proposals involved partial refurbishment and the construction of new bungalows on each site. The existing two-storey blocks were remodelled by converting the 30 existing flats in each block into 20 larger apartments. The external areas were remodelled to improve car parking facilities, provide garden areas to the new bungalows and enhance the communal gardens around the sheltered accommodation block. Additional proposals included new build entrance area to each of the retained two-storey blocks to accommodate communal facilities including a large lobby/foyer, mobility scooter store, office, w/c facilities and a large communal area with kitchen facilities at first floor level.
The scheme constructed by United Living, completed with high levels of resident satisfaction with comments including “It’s a beautiful place and I’m delighted with my flat”. The official opening, on 7th September 2017 included representation by the Mayor of Coventry with local press support and was deemed a success by all involved.
