On the 1st October 2023, the new Building Regulations Principal Designer (BRPD) role came into force. MDA has since expanded our range of services to include this new discipline. Having the in-house expertise to satisfy the detailed competency requirements ensures that MDA continues to be a one-stop building consultancy and has recently been appointed as BRPD for several new and existing projects including –
•Equans Regeneration – Retrofit works to Crosswall properties in Birmingham
•Equans Regeneration – Retrofit works to Low Rise flat blocks in Birmingham
•City of York Council – Refurbishment and Improvement works to 5 Low Rise flat blocks in York
•54 North – Retrofit works to 3 Low Rise flat blocks in Leeds
•Caerphilly County Borough Council – Retrofit works to 86 properties in Tredegar, South Wales
•Monmouthshire Housing Association – Refurbishment works to 2 Low Rise flat blocks in Monmouthshire
•Casey and Co Limited – New build scheme for 23 dwellings in Wythenshaw
•Onward Homes – Retrofit works to 166 properties across Lancashire
•Onward Homes – Retrofit works to 47 properties in Manchester
For those of you who don’t know, the purpose of the BRPD is to plan, manage monitor design work, and cooperate, coordinate and communicate to ensure the design work, if built, complies with building regulations. The BRPD should be part of the design team and not a third-party without any influence over the design decisions. The BRPD should be able to co-ordinate the design team. The BRPD is not expected to be an expert in every design specialism, but they are expected to know enough about the building regulations to assess whether a building design will comply with all relevant regulations.
Essentially, if your project has more than one contractor or involves works not excluded under the 2010 Building Regulations then you should have someone undertaking the BRPD role!
